Derby Cathedral School is a joint venture between the Diocese of Derby and Derby Cathedral and is the next step in their commitment to raising aspirations and opportunities for the young people of Derby. It is being established at a crucial stage of the City’s regeneration and will help meet the need for additional high-quality secondary places in the Derby area and also to give families more choice.
Derby Cathedral School will be a six-form entry 11-19 co-educational school and plans to open with six classes (180 students) in Year 7 and to admit the same number of Year 7 pupils each year thereafter. When full, there will be 1200 students, including a sixth form of 300. It will be a Church of England school and will be fully inclusive, welcoming pupils of all abilities, from all backgrounds, of all faiths and those with no faith. Acts of collective worship and religious education, to which pupils and staff have a right of withdrawal, will reflect the ethos of the school.
The school will equip students with skills and qualifications that will enable them to access high-quality careers in and around the City. The curriculum offer will be broad and balanced and our specialism in Music and Mathematics will be enhanced by strong links with the Cathedral Choir and Music Department, which has a track record of music tutelage – in particular, the organists – in helping to secure Russell Group university places. We will exploit the natural links between these specialist subjects to raise achievement for all learners and encourage self-confidence. Professor Susan Hallam’s paper ‘The Power of Music: its impact on the intellectual, social and personal development of children and young people’ demonstrates that engagement with music education has benefits that include creativity, language and literacy skills, numeracy skills, overall cognitive development and improved general health and well-being.
Derby Cathedral School will be a school with its own Local Governing Body but will be able to access all of the operational structures, services and support already established within the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust.
Strong links will be forged with the family of schools across Derby and our state-of-the-art facilities will be shared with the community.
